In a recent review paper (Frontiers of Physics, Volume 8, Issue 2, pp.116-143, 2013) we describe our current understanding of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia)  from a synthesis of theory and observations. I have contributed the discussion of the observational display of SN Ia explosion models, the section on peculiar subtypes of SNe Ia and  parts of the summary of observational properties.
